Accessibility and technology – opening up a world of opportunity

It’s no secret that technology has absolutely exploded over the past decades. It has helped so many industries grow exponentially, past the point that anyone could have ever expected. Technology has increased people’s ability to stay up to date with current events, stay in touch with each other through social media sites and find answers to just about any question almost instantly. All the things we take for granted today, even ten years ago, might have seemed completely unfathomable.

One important area that technology has really contributed to is education. Children these days are learning at a faster rate than ever, thanks in large part to computer programs, the Internet and other tools that technology has made possible. Teachers have access to a far wider variety of materials and students are able to learn the research skills they need in order to access information as quickly as possible. No longer is education about memorizing facts and figures, it is now more about the skills that students need to locate what they need to know and then learning how to put that knowledge into use. Technology has helped education develop into a focus on application.

Technology has also greatly helped a very specific group of the population, people and children with various developmental and physical disabilities. Education has always been more difficult for disabled students and these challenges have come in many forms. Many students may have found it difficult to even make it to school due to physical issues. The hardship of traveling to school often makes it risky for students to even enter a real classroom. In addition, many developmentally disabled students also find it hard to be in a normal classroom. Some of these students cannot cope with large numbers of people or learning in a multi-student environment.

Luckily, technology today has opened up opportunities for physically and developmentally disabled students to learn in a way that really can work for them. Mobile app software has widened the field of education and opened up ways and avenues for learning that were not even conceived of ten years ago. Students who previously couldn’t make it to school due to physical issues can now learn from the comfort of their home or other safe environment. Thanks to mobile app technology, students can easily access the same material they would in the classroom, without the struggle to physically be there. You might think they would miss out on the community aspect of a traditional classroom, but this is not the case. Mobile app technology lets students interact with others in the same program, just as they would with their peers at school. They can talk through message boards and have direct communication with their teacher, so there is no confusion as to what is going on.

It is not only students with physical disabilities who can benefit from mobile technology apps. Students with developmental or social disorders often find this kind of technology provides them with a better educational opportunity than traditional schools do. It is common for these types of students to be unable to function in a very social environment; not only are they distracted from learning, they also distract their peers. The teacher must often focus on these students, so the rest of the class suffers. With mobile app technology, such students can learn in a much more focused environment that really works for them.

Autistic students in particular find it hard to function within a group. The stimulating classroom environment can trigger them into various reactions that are distracting both for their learning process and for that of their peers. Many teachers struggle learning how to deal with these students and even special education classrooms are often not the answer. Once again mobile app technology provides a solution by allowing autistic students to learn at their own pace and in their own space. It also presents the material in a way that relates to them much better than a traditional lesson would. A similar type of mobile app technology software has also been developed to administer therapy to autistic patients in a gentle and effective way. It can be used in schools and by parents and in therapy centers to help autistic children and students learn effectively while treating their condition. It can help track and assess their behavior and monitor their learning progress. Mobile app technology is a great way to give these students a jump-start into a brighter future.
